Wisdom Teeth Removal

Your "wisdom teeth" are the last upper and lower molars to erupt, and usually do so between the ages of 17 to 25. Some people never experience discomfort when their wisdom teeth erupt or some only have one or a couple; however, when there is limited space or they erupt at a wrong angle, they need to be removed to avoid further problems and pain.

If you need your wisdom teeth removed, you've come to the right place. Most procedures are done in one short and pain-free visit. A digital X-ray will show your dentist the position of your molars and which ones should be removed. A simple extraction consists of using special pliers to rock the molar out of its socket; however, if it has become impacted on your gum it will need to be surgically removed. Sometimes the molar has to be broken into a smaller piece to be able to extract it and will require a small surgical incision and sutures. Local anesthesia is used during wisdom teeth removals because it's usually a short procedure and the gel and injection will numb and block the pain of the area being treated for a few hours.

After the procedure, you might experience some discomfort and swelling for a few days. Recovery time is usually of about three to four days, but it varies from each patient and how invasive was the procedure. Painkillers and ice should make you feel better, but you should avoid hot drinks or solid foods for the first few days. Dentists usually recommend you stick to soft foods for the first few days like apple sauce, ice cream and yogurt, Jell-O, and smoothies, until your gums have healed and you can chew again.

It is crucial that you practice good oral hygiene so that your gums can heal quickly and to prevent infections from happening.
