Gum Disease

What is gum disease?

When plaque accumulates on your teeth, it causes irritation, redness, puffiness and bleeding gums. This inflammatory process is called gingivitis. If the plaque is not removed professionally on a regular basis at the dentist, it will harden and becomes tartar. If you ignore this problem, the bacteria in the plaque will cause loss of the bone that surrounds the teeth. If you lose bone, then this condition is called periodontitis or “gum disease” which is an advanced stage of gingivitis

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

  • Swollen and tender gums
  • Bright red gums
  • Pus between gums and teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Bad taste in your mouth
  • Changes in how teeth fit together
  • Loose teeth

What can I expect from gum disease treatment?

To keep your gum disease from progressing from gingivitis to periodontitis, your dentist may recommend scaling with special tools.

What can I expect during scaling and root planing?

Dr. Issa divides the treatment into two visits. He will numb your gums. Then, he will use special instruments to clean your teeth and their roots.

What is the cost of gum treatment?

Call our office and we will let you know if your insurance covers this treatment. If you do not have insurance, then it usually ranges between $300-$500 depending on the severity of the case. This can be divided into 2-4 payments.
