In essence, orthodontics is a specialty branch of dentistry. An orthodontist is a specialist who has received training in diagnosis, prevention, and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws. In reality, the work of an orthodontist also involves spreading the message of oral hygiene habits as well. Orthodontic treatment, in fact, revolves around how well a patient can take care of his or her teeth and gums after undergoing procedures at the orthodontist’s clinic.

First and foremost, it is the duty of the orthodontic doctor or orthodontist to tell the patients that it is a must to brush their teeth at least twice each day for at least two minutes each. On other occasions, when it is not possible to brush after food or drink intake, they must at least rinse their mouth thoroughly.

What are braces?

Braces are devices which are used to correct teeth positioning in the mouth. Sometimes we get teeth which are positioned incorrectly. This leads to a lot of problems. There are a few types of braces which help us rectify this issue. Traditional braces have evolved over a period to become a bit lighter than what they used to be. They are fashioned out of high-grade stainless steel and have metallic brackets in them which are attached to each tooth with a kind of a cementing substance. In effect, the brackets are connected with each other with the help of a thin archwire. This exerts some pressure on the teeth which makes them shift into positions in which we want them to be, but with time. The archwires are linked to the brackets with very small elastic bands called ligatures or o-rings. These need to be changed now and then at the dental clinic. There are types of braces which do not require o-rings. This variety is called self-ligating braces.

Ceramic braces tend to function like traditional braces. However, in these, the brackets are made with a clear and transparent ceramic substance. The braces are not all that visible, especially from a distance. Thus, this is an ideal option for older people going in for braces in later life when they do not want a lot of people to know they are wearing braces.

Damon braces are now becoming very popular. They are a bit gentle in their work and also need less number of trips to the orthodontist. In effect, these are self-ligating and make use of a sliding type of mechanism in place of elastic bands for linking up the archwires. Speaking, these braces come up with quicker results since teeth can shift on their own without the requirement of any adjustments. Also, they bring in fewer doses of friction and pressure on the teeth and hence, they are a bit less painful in their work. Also, since fewer trips to the dental office are required with these, they tend to be a bit less heavy on the pocket as well.
